ARCHITECTURAL MUSINGS

Timed to coincide with Architecture Week and Open House Perth, Trace curators, architect Leonie Matthews and John Curtin Gallery exhibition coordinator Amanda Alderson, have invited local and national artists and architects to create original works that provide current insights into ‘the nature of the act of drawing’, architecture and the world around us.

For Trace: architectural musings, the participating artists, who comprise Jacqueline Ball, Bevan Honey, Shannon Lyons and Shannon Williamson, with Architects Pia Ednie-Brown, Beth George, Simon Pendal and Stephen Neille (Pendal and Neille), Drew Penhale and Shane Winter (Penhale and Winter), also explore a secondary meaning of drawing – of drawing something out or drawing something in. Tackling the exhibition from this perspective, these creatives extend their thinking of the ‘act’ of drawing, often extracting information to capture a moment or a memory and exposing the hidden world of their practice. Employing a multitude of approaches and mediums, these shared glimpses give the audience an insight into the very act of making. Many of the sketched works hold an energy that links directly to the engagement of an idea through their intent and their imperfections, thereby allowing room for interpretation and notions of suggestiveness.
